Become a helper and help us create real change

Sometimes, the most valuable gift that you can give is your time. Whether it’s helping at events or helping with administration, every little bit of help you can give us makes it possible for even more survivors of sexual abuse to receive the vital support they need. Ngā mihi nui…thank you!

“I have been volunteering for HELP for about three months, working on social media strategy and execution. I have found the experience very rewarding. I believe we can make a real positive change in society through the power of social media by raising awareness about sexual abuse and how to prevent it, as well as supporting the healing journey of survivors.”

A few ways you could HELP us out

We’re always on the lookout for volunteers to help with administration tasks, site maintenance, gardening, organising and running fundraising events. But if you have a different skillset, we’d love to hear from you too.

Please read the FAQs below to see if volunteering is for you. If you’re keen to help, please fill in and submit our volunteer form.

FAQs

Unfortunately, we currently cannot take on volunteers for our crisis or therapy services due to the highly sensitive nature of the work. We may on rare occasions have student placements, subject to meeting certain requirements. Please see our current vacancies for any work opportunities with HELP.

You are welcome to enquire about any other volunteering opportunities via our form below.

Volunteers are crucial for HELP to continue to effectively deliver our services and continue our daily operations. By volunteering for HELP, you can learn more about who we are and what we do to support sexual abuse survivors and their families.

No, you don’t need any qualifications to volunteer with HELP, and depending on what area of HELP you will be volunteering in, we usually require little to no experience. However, we do require you to pass a Ministry of Justice criminal record check as part of our organisation-wide requirements.

The most important thing is that you care about our kaupapa, and have a passion to give back to the community. Technical skills can easily be picked up and you will be well supported by our team to carry out any volunteer tasks.

In return for their time and efforts, we support many of our volunteers to learn and develop new skills, provide references, and ensure they’re a part of our community, inviting our volunteers to many of our annual events and planning days.

The hours you volunteer are totally flexible, and can be discussed between yourself and your supervisor. There are options to volunteer from home if suitable, inside or outside of office hours, long-term or short-term arrangements. Sometimes, for example, we might just need fundraising volunteers to assist at one event, which is an easy way to give back without a huge time commitment!

If a volunteer wants to work for HELP on a more permanent basis, we can discuss the ways this can happen too.

We can arrange to cover transportation costs to and from the office under special circumstances. If you work from the office, you can also help yourself to tea, coffee and fresh fruit. There are often cakes and leftover catering treats in the kitchen, which you can help yourself to. Generally, no other expenses should be required while volunteering for HELP, but in the rare event there are, please notify your supervisor to discuss reimbursement.
